Frequently asked questions
Does basic insurance cover alternative medicine?
Basic insurance covers certain alternative-medicine benefits when they are provided by physicians with the corresponding further training. Treatments by non-medical therapists are generally not covered by basic insurance and are covered through supplementary insurance.
What are EMR and ASCA?
EMR (ErfahrungsMedizinisches Register) and ASCA (Fondation suisse pour les médecines complémentaires) are quality registers for alternative-medicine therapists. Many supplementary insurers only recognise treatments if the therapist is registered accordingly.
What is typically covered?
Depending on the plan, methods such as acupuncture, osteopathy, TCM, homeopathy, phytotherapy, bodywork or mental methods may be partially reimbursed. Reimbursement rates and annual limits depend on the plan.
Do waiting periods or health questions apply?
Supplementary insurance for alternative medicine is governed by the Swiss Insurance Contract Act (VVG). Waiting periods as well as health questions are possible, depending on provider and plan.
What should I look out for when comparing?
On the covered methods, reimbursement rate, annual limit, recognised therapist registers, as well as the conditions for acceptance. A personal review is worthwhile.
